Expectations of Good Management
Expectations of Good Management:
- The environment provided for each dog should be safe and secure, yet spacious in proportion to the number of dogs kept. Dogs should be able to be free from fear and be comfortable.
- Accommodation should be clean and comfortable with adequate heat and ventilation with particular regard for the animal’s health, age and breed. Appropriate and clean bedding material should be available.
- A suitable and adequate diet should be provided and dogs must be able to satisfy their thirst and should normally have access to clean drinking water at all times.
- Dogs should have regular contact with people and exercise should be provided at suitable intervals to all dogs kept. Exercise should be given in the care of a fit and responsible person, and it should be adequate to ensure the dogs’ physical and mental well-being.
- Reasonable precautions must be in place to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and facilities must be available for the treatment of dogs in an emergency. Adequate arrangements or plans should be available for the isolation of sick or injured animals and for the transportation of animals to and from the Assured Breeder’s establishment for veterinary treatment.
- Dogs must be reasonably typical of their breed in terms of appearance and behaviour and must be allowed and unafraid to demonstrate this.
- Dogs must benefit from adequate grooming and timely veterinary treatment when necessary. Records of veterinary treatment should be easily accessible.
- Breeding stock must be permanently identified by either a microchip, a tattoo or a DNA profile.
- Commit to operate to high standards and duty of care and comply with all relevant local and national regulatory requirements.
- Members must keep a register of dogs owned/kept.
- Members should keep breeding records, detailing as a minimum dates and names at matings, whelpings and puppies born and weaned.
- Make reasonable efforts to ensure that dogs are kept under control and do not cause a nuisance to neighbours or to visitors to the property.
- Undertake to give the KC opportunity to review compliance procedures and to investigate any anomalies or complaints by means of a Breeder Advisor visit or other methods.
